If I'm not missing anything and this is just the way the manga is meant to be then I'll just keep reading and assume that all will be explained with time but it's been so confusing that I just had to come here to ask about it and make sure I'm not missing anything or misunderstanding a core fundamental part of the plot. Additionally what the hell happened in between 1997 when the manga started and the sudden jump to the year 2000. Like I kinda thought the whole robot thing was like a very late manga kinda plot point but it just shows up not even a quarter of the way through the manga.
